Draw a PDF Arrow or Line

If you’re annotating or editing a PDF, it’s often useful to be able to point to specific areas of text or images. Arrows or lines can help you make these more nuanced annotations or signifiers on a document.

Whatever your use case, inserting an arrow or line in a PDF has never been easier than with PDF.Live’s online editor. This editor has a lot of functions for drawing shapes and annotating documents. However, for the purposes of this tutorial, we’ll be focusing on how you can add arrows and lines to any PDF you’re working on.

1. Upload your PDF to the PDF.Live Editor.

Simply drag and drop your PDF into the editor or click Select File to Edit and navigate to where your PDF is located on your computer. Once you’ve uploaded your PDF, click Edit PDF to open the PDF.Live editor and start editing your PDF.

2. In the PDF.Live editor toolbar, select the Shapes tab.

PDF.Live’s many editing options are found on this toolbar.

3. For drawing arrows and lines, select the Shape dropdown and select the arrow. 

Here you’ll see the many shapes and figures that PDF.Live’s editor allows you to make. You’ll notice that this toolbar also contains options to customize the style of your shape. Change the color of the shape, its weight, and whether it’s filled with color (this will not apply to arrows and lines). 

4. Select the arrow or line icon and draw an arrow or line on your PDF.

Upon selecting Arrow or Line, your cursor will turn into a + sign, signifying that it’s in drawing mode. From here, you can click anywhere in your PDF to mark a starting point for your arrow. Then, hold down to click and drag your cursor to where you’d like the arrow to point to. Release your click when the arrow is pointing to the correct place. Remember: Where you release your left mouse button will be where the arrow is pointing. 

To change the beginning, end, direction or length of the arrow, select the Move hand and click the arrow to begin adjusting it.

Adding Custom Arrows & Lines in PDFs 

Once you’ve created a line or arrow, you can change its location by clicking it and dragging it anywhere that you want it to be located. You can rotate it by pressing the circular arrow to the right of the shape and dragging it. It will rotate around a fixed axis in the middle of the shape. 

To change the color, shape, or other formatting settings, click your shape and then adjust the formatting settings on the toolbar at the top of the PDF.Live editor. Once you’ve made your changes, click off of your shape, and you’ll see them apply. 

Here, you’ll be able to change how your arrows and lines appear. For example, you can choose a multitude of preset colors for your line. You can also make your own custom colors here. Alternatively, you can change the stroke size of the arrow or line.

To remove existing lines, either click the Trash Can icon next to the line or select the Erase option under Shapes and click and drag over the area you want to erase.

Inserting text into a PDF can be useful when making last-minute adjustments or annotating a document. However, it’s not immediately apparent how to do this in a traditional document editor. PDF.Live’s online PDF editor allows you to insert text into a PDF within your browser, with no additional downloads. You can also easily add text boxes to a PDF entirely online.

Inserting a Text Box in a PDF Online

Text boxes in digital documents are exactly what they sound like: transparent boxes that contain lines of text. These differ from fillable forms, which contain editable fields that allow users to type text into them (as used for job applications, for example).

Text boxes are fairly versatile in their use. They can act as annotations for marking up or putting comments on a document. You can also use text boxes to quickly add new information or text to a document that may have been missing.

So, how do you add a text box to a PDF document? 

To get started, head over to the editor and drag and drop the PDF that you’d like to add text to into the editor tool. The editor will then convert your PDF to an editable PDF and open it in the editor tool.

How to Add a Text Box to PDF Online

1. On the PDF.Live editor toolbar, select Add Text. Clicking on this allows you to create a text box somewhere in the PDF.

2. Click and drag anywhere in your PDF to create a text box to your size specifications.

The default text will be Insert text here, but once you’ve created the text box, you can then type anything in it that you’d wish.

You may notice that, by default, the text box will have black text. These formatting settings can be changed by adjusting the formatting, found underneath the Add Text function in the PDF.Live toolbar. 

3. Change the Style of your text box. 

With the text box selected, you’ll be able to adjust the formatting of the text in the box. You can change the text font, size, alignment, and more. 

Change the size and color of the font in the Text area under the Colors section to better match the original style of the PDF you’re adding text to. 

Edit Text in PDF

If you wish to edit existing text boxes in a PDF or copy the text formatting from your existing document, head to the Edit Text tab of the toolbar. This tool allows you to select existing text in your PDF for editing. Simply click the text area that you want to edit and start typing on your keyboard. 

The tool will automatically detect the formatting settings of text that exists within the PDF and best match it with PDF.Live’s built-in text editor. You can copy these formatting settings for further use.

You can see the formatting settings of your text on the toolbar. This also lets you customize the text, font, color, or size of existing text.

If you need to go back and edit the text of a document, double-click an existing text box that you’ve made. 

Note that using this method, you can only edit the text this way in text boxes that you’ve created. Editing the text in your PDF is a different process.

What’s the Best Way to Proof PDFs?

PDF.Live’s editing allows you to do much more than just leave comments on a PDF. We’ll explain how you can use the tool to highlight, underline, strike through and add text, which makes collaboration between content creators and editors easy.

Using PDFs for content proofing is efficient. The content creator can export the document as a PDF, which is a universal file format, so the editors don’t have to have the same software. For example, if a graphic designer creates an e-book in a program like Adobe Illustrator, the editor needn’t learn to use the same (expensive) software. The editor uses PDF.Live to mark up the PDF and send it back to the graphic designer.

With PDF.Live, you can mark up, comment, and annotate any PDF using the online PDF editor tool. Then, once the edits have been suggested, the content creator can take it back to the original program (Word, Illustrator, PowerPoint, etc.) and implement the changes.

PDF Proofreading to Annotate, Comment, Suggest, and More

Open a PDF document in the PDF.Live editor, and find the Annotate tab at the top of the screen, which will have most of the edit functions.

There are a lot of functions in this section to take note of, depending on how you like to proofread. Before you make any proofreader marks, though, note the two options you have for interacting with the page.

On the upper left, the Move and Select tools are your two options.

• The Move tool, marked by the hand icon, will allow you to drag and move the page, as well as objects that you create in the editor.
• The Select tool, marked by the dotted box, allows you to select elements in the PDF that you want to make edits or annotations to.

For highlighting, underlining, striking out or replacing text in a PDF, select the function you’d like to perform under the annotate tab. You can change the opacity of the annotation you make and the color of it in this tab as well. 

Striking out text: Select the Strikeout tool on the toolbar. Then, click and drag over text to start striking through it.

Highlighting text: Select the Highlight tool on the toolbar. Then, click and drag over the text to highlight it.

Underlining text: Select the Underline tool on the toolbar. Then, click and drag over the text that you want to underline.

Squiggle text: Select the Squiggle tool on the toolbar. Then, click and drag over the text you want to have a squiggle under. 

Replacing Text: Select the Edit Text tab. Editable areas of your PDF will now be outlined by blue dashes. Double-click an area to edit the text.

Erase annotation: Click the Erase option and click and drag over the annotation you want to delete. 

Add a line or shape: Click the Shapes tab, and click the drop down next to the Shape option. Select the shape you’d like to make and then edit the color, fill, or weight of the shape. Click and drag on the PDF where you’d like to make your shape!

Editing a PDF After Someone’s Proofed It

Let’s say someone proofread your document, and you want to make changes to it with the PDF.Live editor. The best way to do this is to pull up the original document that you created in Microsoft Word or a similar document editor. Then, have the edited PDF open and make the changes as necessary.

However, let’s say that you don’t have access to the original document or need to make a quick edit. The PDF.Live Edit Text section allows you to make simple edits to the text or add images to your PDF.

This tool lets you select existing text in a document and change it! The tool will automatically match the font of the text you’re editing, but you may need to change the color or type in capitals to match the original formatting. 

This tool can add text to your PDF by simply clicking where you want to add text, creating a text box! Tip: If you want to add comments to your PDF while proofreading it, this is a good way to add a “text box” next to a section! Note that you will need to edit the Font, color, and font size to match the formatting of the document you’re editing.
