Removing Text from PDF Files Using PDF.Live

Adding text to a PDF is useful for making edits to a document, but what about removing text? Is this possible with the PDF.Live editor?

Yes! PDF.Live’s online editor functions entirely in your browser, allowing you to make edits and changes to your PDFs with no additional downloads. In this article, we’ll show you how you can use this powerful tool to remove and delete text from a PDF.

Removing Text From a PDF in 3 Steps

1. Upload your PDF to the PDF.Live editor.

To get started removing text from a PDF, open PDF.Live's editing tool and then click or drag your PDF. Click the green Edit PDF button.

Either drag and drop your document into the editor or Select File to Edit and navigate to it in your file explorer. Once you’re ready to get started, select Edit PDF.

2. Under the Popular Editing Tools on the right-hand panel, select Edit Text.

From the Popular Editing Tools panel, find Edit Text. Here it is in green.

With this tool selected, you can then click on characters and sentences in your PDF to adjust them.

3. Click the text you want to delete

PDF.Live's editing tool shows you editable fields by surrounding them with dotted blue lines. We've selected 'make kayaks and canoes' text to delete.

In this example, the PDF.Live editor has highlighted several areas where it’s recognized text. These areas are marked by a dotted blue outline. The PDF.Live editor will group sections of text together.

4. Press the Delete key on your keyboard or click the trash can icon to remove the block of text entirely.

The text has been completely deleted from the PDF.

Of course, you may want to delete an individual sentence, word, or letter, depending on your needs. To do this, select the text box from which you want to remove a word. You’ll be able to highlight text as you would in a document editing software.

The first sentence has been selected, showing blue highlights, which can now be deleted.

Press the Backspace button to delete words within your document. You can add, remove, and edit text the same way that you would with a program like Microsoft Word or Google Docs.

Be cautious when deleting text boxes entirely, because the PDF editor may not be able to replace the text in a way that will perfectly match your original document, especially if the document used an unusual or uncommon font.

For this reason, we recommend saving your original PDF as a separate copy in case you need to go back and make edits.

Once you’re done making your edits, select Download or Export to download the edited version of your PDF.
